S'side Wal-Mart warns shoppers of phone scam

If you get a phone call and the person on the other end tells you that you're the lucky winner of a Wal-Mart shopping spree, you're not as fortunate as you think.

According to a spokesman from the Sunnyside Wal-Mart store, there is currently a telephone scam underway that links the national retailer to the rip-off.

The telephone solicitation scam involves the caller informing the targeted victim that he or she has won a Wal-Mart shopping spree, in exchange for credit card information or checking account routing numbers.

Wal-Mart officials advise all who receive such a call to report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC website (www.ftc.gov) details similar scans and offers those on-line a site where they can file a complaint.

The Sunnyside Wal-Mart spokesman said the phone scam has been reported in various regions of the country, including here in the Yakima Valley.
