Bender second at PGA pro-am

WENATCHEE - Jeff Bender's 1-under-par 71 this past Monday earned the Sunnyside Black Rock Creek golf pro a runner-up finish at the PGA pro-am tournament staged at the Wenatchee Golf & Country Club.

A total of 193 professional and amateur golfers competed in the one-day tourney, which was the 13th of 26 pro-am events being sponsored this summer by the Central Washington chapter of the PGA.

Lakeview Golf & Country Club professional Mike Schoner won the pro division with a 3-under-par 69. The low amateur round carded Monday was a 4-under 68, claimed by Chris Quinn of the host Wenatchee course.

Bender, in placing second in the professional division, snared a birdie on the par-3 16th to earn one of six skins tallied by the professionals.

The Black Rock Creek Golf Course club pro also led his five-person squad to a fourth place finish in the team competition. Bender-along with amateurs Robbie Goins, Tom Diener, Gene McIntyre and Derek Wood-shot an aggregate 202. The winning team from the host Wenatchee course carded a 194.

Wood and Diener also cashed in individual play. Wood tied for second place honors in the net scoring column (actual score minus handicap) for amateur division #2 golfers. He shot a handicap-aided 70. Diener fired an 84 to place fifth among amateur division #2 golfers.
