Sleeping G'view driver blamed for wreck on I-82

ZILLAH - An elderly Wapato couple was injured yesterday afternoon when their 1988 Toyota pick-up truck plowed through an adjoining fence along I-82 near Zillah and rolled.

Both, 82-year-old Harold E. LaForge and 71-year-old Betty J. LaForge were transported by ambulance to Yakima Regional Hospital.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the LaForges' pick-up truck was struck from behind by a 1984 Chevrolet pick-up, driven by Marco Marquez, 45, of Grandview. WSP troopers said Marquez fell asleep at the wheel, lost control of his vehicle and struck the left rear of LaForge's truck.

Both vehicles were westbound on I-82 when the Monday, 1:47 p.m. accident occurred.

The rear end collision sent the Toyota pick-up careening off the roadway to the right through a fence, before rolling. Marquez's vehicle also left the freeway, striking a sign on the right side shoulder and then veered back across the westbound lanes before coming to rest in the median.

WSP troopers said Marquez also sustained injuries but did not require hospitalization.

Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.
