Little Guy wrestling opens season

ROYAL CITY - The Sunnyside Little Guy youth wrestling program kicked off its 2005 season at its first tournament in Royal City this past weekend.

The Sunnyside program earned three first place finishes, two of which came in the 11-12-year-old division.

In the 11-12-year-old division, Zak Martinez (105 lbs.) and Nathan Gonzalez (72 lbs.) both brought home first place medals. The team's other first place medal came from J.J. Rodriquez, who competed in the 54-lb. division of the 5-6-year-old bracket.

The team also had numerous second place finishes at the Royal City tournament.

Josiah Rodriquez was second in the 5-6-year-old, 38-lb. bracket. Teammate Santana Ramirez finished second in the same age division, but in the 40-lb. bracket. Sebastian Renteria took second place in the 45-lb. division of the 5-6-year-old bracket.

In the 7-8-year-old division, Stevie Rodriquez won second place honors in the 49-lb. weight class.

P.J. Ramos was second in the 9-10-year-old division of the 60-lb. bracket.

In the 13-14-year-old division, James Garza won second place honors at 108 lbs., while teammate Freddy Gonzalez was second in the 101 lb. division.

Taking third in the 5-6-year-old, 39-lb. division was Angel Chavez.

The Sunnyside Little Guy program had two third place finishes in the 7-8-year-old division. Homer Romero took third in the 56-lb. bracket and Jorge Macias was third in the 130-lb. division.

In the 9-10-year-old division, Jacob Galindo was third in the 64-lb. bracket.

Josh Romero was third in the 99-lb., 11-12-year-old division. Teammate Izzy Gonzalez took third in the 77-lb. bracket of the same age division.

T.J. Ozuna was third in the 163 lb., 13-14-year-old age division.

The Sunnyside team had two fourth place finishes. Sierra Gonzalez was fourth in the 57-lb. bracket of the 5-6-year-old division. Jacob Chavez took fourth in the 9-10-year-old, 101-lb. bracket.
