Mabton places half of wrestlers at Royal City tourney

ROYAL CITY - The Little Mabton Vikings youth wrestling program had quite the outing at this past Saturday's 19-team tournament in Royal City.

Of the 22 wrestlers the Mabton program took to the event, 11 of them placed.

The majority of medalists for Mabton brought home first place honors.

In the 13-14-year-old division, Saul Valdez claimed first place in the 165-lb. bracket. Valentine Morales also nabbed first place honors in the 72-lb., 9-10-year-old division.

The Vikings had two first place finishes in the 5-6-year-old division. Desanay Guerrero won the 63-lb. bracket and Gilbert Martinez took top honors in the 40-lb. division.

In the 11-12-year-old division, Frank Martinez won the 105-lb. bracket. Teammate Vesente Mireles claimed top honors in the 7-8-year-old, 60-lb. division.

Mabton had a couple of second place finishes. Desriee Zavala took runner-up honors in the 5-6-year-old, 49-lb. bracket. Danny Vargas won the 9-10-year-old, 72-lb. division.

Third place honors went to Rafael Martinez in the 9-10-year-old, 96-lb. division. Emiliano Rodriguez won the consolation prize in the 7-8-year-old, 54-lb. bracket. Also competing in the 7-8-year-old, 80-lb. bracket was Brandon Marquez, who placed third.

Mabton will be competing at the 20-team Wapato tournament this Saturday.
