Board recognizes retirees appreciation week

The Sunnyside School Board at February's meeting formally recognized Gov. Christine Gregoire's proclamation honoring retired educators.

The governor joined the Washington State School Retirees Association in acknowledging School Retirees Appreciation Week.

"Our relationship with our local chapter is very positive," said Sunnyside School District Superintendent Dr. Rick Cole. "I would like to encourage everyone to thank a former employee. Give them a hug."

Board to hold middle school work session

Several members of the Sunnyside School Board will take part in a work session at Harrison Middle School on Thursday, March 3.

The board work session will begin at 9 a.m. with members being able to see what is taking place at the school during working hours.

School board to hold special workshop on dual language

Citing a need to devote more time to the subject, the Sunnyside School Board decided at last month's meeting to hold a special workshop in regards to the district's dual language program.

The district currently offers a dual language program at its elementary grade levels, teaching students curriculum together in both English and Spanish.

The board will be gathering for an indepth study session on the district dual language program Tuesday, March 15, at the board room in the Denny Blaine Building. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.

At the meeting, the board is scheduled to discuss the pros and cons of the program and to receive more input on a recent trip district staff took to Texas to learn more about dual language.
