Rilla D. Carson, 99, a long-time Mabton resident and school teacher passed away Monday, March 7, 2005, at Hillcrest Manor in Sunnyside.

She was born June 9, 1905 in Denver, Colo. to Rilla J. (Davis) and Albert D. Carson. Rilla moved with her family to Oregon and California and lived in a number of towns in the two states. She started her schooling in Grass Valley, Calif. and left in the sixth grade, when her family moved to Mabton in December 1916. She finished her grade school and high school in May of 1923. She later attended Ellensburg Normal School for four years getting her Bachelor of Arts degree. Rilla taught for 39 years in the Mabton School District.

She is survived by her special friend, Lucille Goodwin of Camarillo, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Marie Carson and Jocelyn Butler; and one brother, Jesse.

Viewing and visitation will be held Wednesday, March 9, 2005, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside. Graveside services will be held Thursday, March 10, 2005, at 10 a.m. at Mabton Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
