The community turned out this past Monday night to honor some of the best and brightest at Sunnyside High School.
The high school held its annual winter sports awards ceremony, which honors student athletes for their accomplishments on and off the athletic field.
Academic awards were handed out to student athletes for having the highest grade point average in their respective sport.
Receiving top academic honors on the drill team was Jacqueline DeRuyter. Maggie Ramirez earned top academic honors on the rally squad.
The high grade point average on the varsity bowling team went to Veronica Alvarez.
Of the high school wrestlers, Joseph Villanueva carried the top academic marks on the varsity wrestling team while James Van Wingerden had the best grade point average on the junior varsity team.
Top academic honors on the girls varsity basketball team went to Talia Spini. Veronica Garza had the high junior varsity academic marks while Anika Zamora was recognized for her classroom accomplishments on the C-squad. Brenda Barrios had the high grade point average on the girls freshman team.
Eric Crimp had the high grade point average on the varsity boys basketball team. Jamie Sambrano had the best academic marks on the junior varsity squad while Tim Taylor earned the best grade point average on the C-squad. Cameron Boboth had the high grade point average on the freshman boys basketball team.
Anthony Kim had the best grade point average on the high school boys swim team.
Student athletes were also recognized for their athletic accomplishments during the winter sports season.
State wrestling champion Steve Sanchez was honored with the captain and most inspirational awards for the Grizzly wrestling program. Pete Garza was named this year's most valuable wrestler while Victor Moreno earned most improved honors. J.T. Gonzalez was named the outstanding junior varsity wrestler.
Andrea Phillips earned captain honors on the Sunnyside High School girls basketball team. Erica Mendez was named this year's MVP while Victoria Sarmiento received defensive MVP honors. Vanessa Alvarez was named the most inspirational player while teammate Talia Spini was named most improved.
Reid Schilperoort earned two season-ending awards from the Sunnyside High School boys basketball program. Schilperoort was named captain and this year's most valuable player. Efren Duran was named the most inspirational player and Luke Schilperoort was named the most improved player.
Casey Romero and Viri Pasillas received the coaches award on the rally squad while teammate Marina Martinez was the recipient of the spirit award.
Maria Cruz was the recipient of the captain's award on the Grizzliettes dance team this year. Maritza Mendoza received the coaches award while teammate Valerie Diaz was named best dancer. Jeanette Alvarez was named the most improved member while Jacqueline DeRuyter was named most inspirational dancer.
On the Lady Grizzly bowling team, Desiree Pritchett grabbed two awards. She was named this year's captain along with Cora Rodriguez, while also earning the high average award. The spirit award went to Crystal Soto while rally captain honors went to Crystal Carpino.
Daniel Negrete was named the most improved athlete on the boys swim team.
