Claretta Marie “Toby” Shannon, 69, of Yakima died Thursday, March 17, 2005.

She was born Feb. 10, 1936 in Mabton to Theresa and Leonard Tobin. She completed her early education in various Catholic schools throughout the Northwest, graduating from St. Joseph Academy in Sprague in 1954. She continued her education at St. Elizabeth’s School of Nursing, graduating as a registered nurse in 1957.

On Feb. 15, 1958 she married Richard Shannon in Grandview. She moved back to the Yakima Valley in 1963. She worked at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for 30 years as an emergency registered nurse.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Shannon of Yakima; her children; Randy and Kathy Shannon of Damascus, Ore., Trina and Keith Dale of Hoquiam, Rory and Barbara Shannon of Puyallup, Ryan and Marnie Shannon of Yakima and Lisel Campbell of Blaine; 13 grandchildren; her siblings, Jeanette and Bill Castle, Betty and Dean Doerschlag, Jim and Beth Tobin, Toots and Jerry Roy, Don and Theresa Tobin, David and Carmen Tobin, John Colby, Ilene and Ray Bouchey, Freda and Ted Stegeman, Marge Shannon, Neva and Ben Robillard and Linda Lyons.

Vigil and Rosary will be held Monday, March 21, 2005, at 7 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside. A Mass of Remembrance will be held Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Yakima. Inurnment will be held at Mabton Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside, is in charge of arrangements.


Helen Ruth Reid, 67, a long-time Mabton and Sunnyside resident passed away Friday, March 18, 2005, from Prosser Memorial Hospital.

Helen was born Dec. 20, 1937 in Cleveland, Ark., the daughter of Wilma Leddie and Lester Reid. She received her education in Arkansas. The family moved to Mabton in 1970, where Helen was a cook at the Mabton Café. She worked at Sunnyside Safari until retiring in 1993.

Helen loved spending time with her grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

She enjoyed cross-stitching, cooking and watching cooking shows.

Helen is survived by five children, Bob Pierce of Nevada; Doug David of Yakima, Robin Tracy and husband, Dave, of Washington, Tara Robert and Saul Saenz, and Laura Vasquez and husband, Albert, of Mabton; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Jean Kinney of Arkansas, Carolyn Caton and Brenda Trigg, both of California; two brothers, Sonny Reid and Darrel Reid, both of Arkansas; and her stepmother, Georgia Getrny.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Gary David; two sisters, Anna Lee Christensen and Nancy Mason.

A time of fellowship will be held Wednesday, March 23, 2005, from 4 p.m. till 6 p.m. at South Hill Park in Sunnyside.

Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside, is in charge of arrangements.
