Bender third at PGA pro-am

KENNEWICK - Black Rock Creek's Jeff Bender shot an even-par 65 yesterday to earn a share of the third place prize at a PGA pro-am event at Tri-City Country Club.

Monday's tournament was the first of 26 pro-am events that comprise the Les Schwab Tire Centers Pro-Am Series sanctioned by the Central Washington chapter of the PGA. During the 2005 series approximately a quarter of a million dollars in prizes and purses will be distributed.

Bender, the head pro at Sunnyside's Black Rock Creek Golf Course, tied for third in the professional division yesterday. He was two shots off the winning pace, a 2-under 63 carded by Scott Johnson of Horn Rapids Golf Course. Todd Gaines of Meadow Springs Country Club placed second in the professional division with a 1-under 64. Bender and Chris Isaacson of the host Tri-City Country Club split third place honors with identical 65's.

No other member of the Black Rock Creek pro-am squad cashed at the March 21 event.

The low amateur round posted yesterday was a 1-over 66, claimed by Ellensburg's Dan Whitaker, who was representing the Toppenish Mt. Adams Country Club team.
