Grandview girls corral Mustangs

PROSSER - The colder weather yesterday may have contributed to Grandview taking taking awhile to get warmed-up.

The Lady 'Hounds may have gotten off to a slow start Tuesday afternoon in their season opener, but once Grandview warmed up there was no stopping the team. Grandview finished with a win over the Prosser Mustangs, 14-9.

"The game started out with some extremely cold weather," said Grandview Coach Doug Hansen. He said Greyhound pitcher Mari Cornejo started the game by walking three of the first four batters. She then allowed a three-run that brought the first inning score to 4-0 with Prosser in the lead.

"Then Mari settled down," Hansen said, explaining she worked to keep Prosser scoreless in the second and third innings.

"In the fourth inning we just kind of erupted with the bats," Hansen said.

He said the fourth inning started with junior Felisha Cruz getting a slap hit to put her on base, followed by senior Sarah Trevino, who walked. Hansen said Rocky Rodriguez was at the plate next, slapping a base bit that scored one run. Then sophomore Zulema Cornejo came up with a base hit to drive in the second run for Grandview. Senior Nicole Bolt followed with a base hit, followed by senior Cheyanne Trevino, who had a hit that drove in another runner.

But even with the action packed inning, the Mustangs came back to score three runs, putting them within one run of the Lady 'Hounds.

Grandview answered back in the fifth inning, scoring six runs on a combination of hits and a couple of walks, that ensured Prosser wouldn't be able to catch up.

Hansen said he was happy with his team's performance yesterday. He noted that Mari Cornejo did a good job on the pitching rubber, helping out with three strikeouts.

"She just threw the ball really hard," Hansen said of Cornejo.

Two players who put in a good performance against Prosser included Rodriguez, who went 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs, and Cheyanne Trevino, who was 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs.

"Cheyanne had very good bat control," Hansen commented.

Hansen added that it was nice to start the regular season out with a win.

The Lady 'Hounds will hit the field again Thursday for another non-league game, taking on the Grizzlies at Sunnyside High School.
