Grizzlies take the hop out of the Jackrabbits

Sunnyside High School Coach Dave Martinez was obviously pleased following yesterday's dominating victory over visiting 2A Quincy.

Sunnyside hammered the Jackrabbits 13-3 in six innings.

"They put it all together," said Martinez of his team's performance.

Derek Uberuaga had an overpowering game on the mound for the Grizzlies. The senior standout threw all six innings, needing only 82 pitches. Uberuaga recorded four strikeouts and three walks while scattering six hits. Uberuaga didn't give up his first walk in the game until the fifth inning.

"He cruised yesterday," said Martinez of his ace.

About the only area Uberuaga had problems with Thursday afternoon was the four-five-six hitters for the Jackrabbits. Martinez said the middle of the line-up for Quincy is pretty solid.

The Grizzly bats exploded on Quincy, racking up 15 hits. Uberuaga helped his cause, going 3-for-4 at the plate with two home runs and six RBIs. Teammate Cole Boboth swung a nice bat yesterday, going 3-for-4.

Quincy plated two runs in the top of the fourth inning and one more run in the fifth.

The Grizzlies opened the game with a three-spot in the bottom of the first and added four more in the second. Sunnyside had a one-run fourth inning before busting the game open with a five-run sixth.

Sunnyside scored all five of its runs in the sixth inning with no outs. Boboth started the inning with a double. Chris Newberry then walked, which was followed by a home run from Uberuaga. Eric Crimp then walked and Tyler Esqueda doubled. Crimp scored off a passed ball. Esqueda then scored a run when Timmy Briones laced a single.

Martinez said the bats of his players surprised him yesterday, as he felt his team was still a bit behind at the plate.

Uberuaga forced Quincy into hitting a lot of pop-ups in yesterday's game. But he also received some nice help defensively. Martinez cited as one example how Crimp had three good digs at first base for outs.

Sunnyside (0-0, 2-2) will have a good test Saturday at home against Bellingham, which has thumped the Grizzlies the past few years.

"Saturday is a good test for us," said Martinez.
