PASCO - The Mabton High School fastpitch softball team overcame the pouring rain and 24 errors on the day to finish third at the Tri-City Prep Fastpitch Tournament at the TRAC facility in Pasco this past Saturday.
The Vikings were third out of eight teams. Garfield-Palouse won the tourney title with Granger finishing second. Mabton followed in third place and Lyle rounded out the top four.
The tourney games were Mabton's season openers.
Mabton Coach Jesus Sustaita said he was pretty proud of his team bringing home a trophy from the tournament, overcoming the weather and the errors the team made.
"We had a lot of fundamental errors," said Sustaita. "That is what hurt us."
Mabton opened the tournament against Granger, losing 20-8.
The Lady Spartans used a five-run sixth and eight-run seventh inning to pull away from Mabton.
The Lady Vikings had 13 errors in their first game of the season.
"Those errors just hurt us," said Sustaita.
The big innings for the Lady Vikings were a three-run fifth and a three-run seventh.
Mabton junior Alida Mendoza had a nice opening outing on the mound, finishing with six strikeouts. She allowed six hits and gave up five walks.
Michelle Tellez was 1-for-1 for Mabton, but drew three walks.
The second game of the tournament was a bit better for the Lady Vikings, as they pounded host Tri-City Prep, winning 19-2.
Mabton got a solid effort from sophomore Josie Tellez on the mound. Tellez allowed just two hits and two walks while fanning five.
"She was pretty consistent," said Sustaita.
Mendoza swung a fierce bat for the Lady Vikings, going 4-for-5 at the plate.
The big innings for the Lady Vikings were a six-run second inning and an eight-run fourth. Mendoza had a two-run triple in the fourth for Mabton.
Sustaita said the difference for Mabton was the Lady Vikings swung the bat a lot better, recording 13 hits and committed only two errors.
In the game for third and fourth place, Mabton needed all it could to overcome Lyle, winning 13-12.
The Lady Vikings took a 13-10 lead after scoring four runs in the sixth inning. Mendoza had a three-run homer in the sixth inning for Mabton that proved to be the difference maker.
Mendoza also helped her cause with a tireless effort on the mound. Mendoza struck out three and walked four while allowing eight hits against Lyle.
"She did real well," said Sustaita. "She was real consistent."
The Lady Vikes won the game by getting out of a bases-loaded jam with two outs in the top of the seventh. The game ended with Mabton's Patty Mendoza tossing the ball to Michelle Tellez at second base to get the force and end the game.
The Lady Vikings (0-0, 2-1) open Greater Columbia 'B' League play this coming Friday at home against Klickitat in a twin bill.
"We are going to be working real hard at practice (this week)," said Sustaita.
