OTHELLO - A total of four first place finishes at the Othello Track & Field Relays this past Saturday gave Sunnyside a second place finish in the boys standings and a third place showing among the girls.
The lone victory garnered by the Sunnyside boys came in the discus. The trio of Jason Aguirre, Eric Rinehold and Casey Smith had an aggregate throw of 294-0, eclipsing the second place throwers from Toppenish by about six feet.
Sunnyside's girls notched three first place finishes.
The first of their victories came in the throwers 4x100-meter relay. The foursome of Claire Schilperoort, Barnes, Carly Dahlstrom and Valenzuela sped to a clocking of 1:03.1. They beat the second place team from Naches by one-tenth of a second.
The second Sunnyside girls victory came in the discus with an aggregate throw of 233-5. The winning team was comprised of Schilperoort, Dahlstrom and Ramirez. The Lady Grizzly trio bested the runner-up Naches squad by two inches.
Sunnyside's girls also captured top honors in the javelin. Setting the top mark of 233-10, more than 19 feet further than second place finishing Othello, was the Lady Grizzly trio of Dahlstrom, Schilperoort and Brenda Barrios.
Dahlstrom, Schilperoort and Valenzuela also snagged a second place finish in the girls shotput with an aggregate throw of 76-5. East Valley won the event with a total tally of 78-2.
On the boys side, Sunnyside recorded six runner-up performances. The second place finishers for the Grizzlies included Michael Graham in the pole vault (8-0); Rinehold, Graham and Colton in the javelin; Jaime Sambrano, Pacheco, Sarmiento and Luke Schilperoort in the 4x200-meter relay (1:44.8); Cipriano Meraz in the 1,600-meter run (5:06.8); Sambrano, Pacheco, Sarmiento and Schilperoort in the 4x100-meter relay (50.2); and Graham in the 110-meter hurdles (17.9).
Sunnyside, too, managed a second place finish in the 4x300-meter coed relay. The squad was comprised of Cassie Jolliff, Jordyne Jaquish, Sarmiento and Schilperoort.
