MATTAWA - If one has ever been to Mattawa, then they know how strong the wind can blow. And yesterday was no exception, as the Sunnyside Christian High School baseball team made its way down the road to play Wahluke in a non-league game.
But Sunnyside Christian Coach Jeff Bosma doesn't offer any excuses in the 11-10 loss to the Warriors.
"Six errors were really where they got their runs from," said Bosma.
The Warriors got on the board in the bottom of the first before the Knights were able to tie the game, plating a run in the top of second. Wahluke exploded for three runs in the bottom of the second and then two more in the third.
Trailing 6-1, the Knights fought back in the top of the fourth with two runs before plating four in the top of the fifth to take a 7-6 lead. The Warriors responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
The Knights looked as if they were going to pull the game out following a three-run spot in the top of the seventh. Derek Van de Graaf had a lead-off homer for Sunnyside Christian in the seventh. Matt Haak then drew a walk and stole second, one of two stolen bases he had on the day. Haak later scored off a single from Chad Den Boer, who was 4-for-5 at the plate on the day. Den Boer then stole second and later scored off a wild pitch.
But, Sunnyside Christian wasn't able to hold on to its 10-7 lead in the bottom of the seventh. One of the Knights' six errors on the day led to the Warriors scoring what was the winning run.
Bosma said the weather had nothing to do with the outcome of the game. He said Wahluke had to play in the same conditions, but yet only committed one error.
Bosma was happy with the way his Knights overcame the six errors to take a lead late in the game. He was also pleased with the 11 hits Sunnyside Christian rattled off at the plate.
Sunnyside Christian (0-2, 1-4) will have its hands full this Friday afternoon with a league doubleheader at LaSalle.
"We are going to go out and play hard," said Bosma.
