Vikings slay the Spartans

GRANGER - It was a good day for the Mabton High School baseball team, but Viking skipper Kerry Snodgrass joked the weather was nothing to write home about in yesterday's game at Granger.

"I told the kids I have had worse days, but I can't remember when," said Snodgrass referring to the fact that the weather made for miserable playing conditions.

The Vikings spanked Granger 28-4 in a five-inning, non-league affair.

The Spartans had two runs in the first and single runs in the fourth and fifth innings off of five hits.

Mabton picked up some solid pitching in the blustery conditions.

Viking junior Rey Elizondo worked the first three innings on the mound, striking out seven while allowing two hits and six walks. However, three of the six walks he gave up were to the first three batters he faced in the game, two of whom scored.

"He did fine," said Snodgrass of Elizondo.

Snodgrass said the wind was horrible, but Elizondo was close to hitting his spots all day.

Marco Zepeda tossed the final two innings in relief, fanning five. He allowed just three hits.

Zepeda also had a nice day at the plate, going 5-for-5 with an RBI triple in the third and four RBIs on the day.

The Vikings got on the board early with a six-run burst in the top of the first. Mabton then plated nine runs in the second and exploded for 11 in the top of the third. The Vikings had a two-run spot in the fourth. Alex Zavala started the fourth inning for Mabton with a single and then scored off Zepeda's triple. James Magana then had a base hit to score Zepeda.

Mabton had 16 hits on the day and took advantage of 13 Granger walks.

Snodgrass said what was key for Mabton was the pitching performances of Elizondo and Zepeda.

"The weather was a serious factor," said Snodgrass. "So, it is really important for the pitchers to be throwing strikes."

Snodgrass said with the pitchers throwing strikes it keeps the rest of the team interested in what is happening.

"Rey and Marco did a good job of keeping us in the game," said Snodgrass.

The Vikings (0-2, 2-2) were scheduled to play Klickitat this Friday, but the Vandals aren't fielding a team this season. Mabton is off until next Tuesday when the Vikings travel to Thorp-Easton.
