Classroom flood damage extensive

The Sunnyside School Board signed an emergency resolution at last week's meeting to forgo the requirements of the state bid law to make repairs to the high school.

Sunnyside School District Superintendent Dr. Rick Cole explained that 16 classrooms at the high school suffered extensive damage following a massive rainstorm that pounded the Valley in late April.

"We are working with the insurance company to make sure it is covered," said Cole.

The district has a $5,000 deductible it will have to meet in paying for damages, added Sunnyside School District Executive Director of Finance Dave Plesha. Plesha said some of the repairs may have to wait until after school ends.

Cole also praised the efforts of district maintenance worker Jim Jansen and several school custodians, who worked to get the floors dry at the high school, so classes could be held the Monday following the weekend downpour.
