Washington State Patrol detectives investigating car/pedestrian incident

Washington State Patrol detectives are investigating an incident at 3251 SR 241 which sent a Sunnyside woman to Harborview Medical Center early Sunday morning.

According to state patrol officials, detectives are still looking into an altercation that occurred before the car/pedestrian incident.

As of now, officials believe that Gilbert J. Fernandez, 19, arrived at a party at the residence while a fight was already in progress. He was assaulted and as he was backing up to leave the party hit a woman with his open car door.

The woman struck by the car was Valerie D. Yarnell, 40, of Sunnyside. She was taken to Sunnyside Community Hospital and then transferred to Harborview Medical Center. She was transferred to the Seattle hospital later Sunday morning. She is currently in the intensive care unit in serious condition.

Detectives are still looking into whether they will be charging Fernandez, but as of Monday morning, officials said it looked like he wouldn't be charged with a crime.
