SELAH - The Sunnyside boys tennis team is on a roll. Tuesday afternoon the team scored its fourth straight victory, this time tallying a 3-2 win against the Selah Vikings.
The boys (3-5, 5-5) weren't the only Sunnyside team to secure a victory yesterday. The Lady Grizzlies also managed to put away the Vikings, winning 4-1.
Playing in the No. 1 singles spot for Sunnyside was junior Danny Plesha, who won against Selah's Cody Alliston 6-1, 6-0.
Sunnyside Coach Troy Whittle said Alliston is a good tennis player and managed to hit really well with Plesha, but in the end Plesha was the better player.
Johnny Plesha, Sunnyside No. 2 singles player, scored a victory over Selah's Joe Kohler, winning 6-0, 6-1.
The No. 1 doubles team of Tyler Thompson and Jonathan Beals lost to the Vikings' Jason Sutton and Chad Womack 6-4, 6-1.
Whittle said the Sunnyside team was up 4-3 in the first set, but ended up letting their emotions get the best of them.
Sunnyside's Jake Wavrin and Hunter Van de Graaf, the No. 2 doubles team, won over Josh Burwell and Tim Smith 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
In this match, Whittle said Wavrin and Van de Graaf got off to a slow start, but managed to stay consistent and gain the upper hand.
In the No. 3 doubles spot, the team of Jesus Alquicira and Justin Snyder lost to Selah's Josh Surratt and Sean Burmaster 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Whittle said both members of the Sunnyside team were sick, which he thinks contributed to the loss.
As for the girls (6-2, 8-2), No. 1 singles player Dolores Gomez won over Selah's Jennylyn Aganad 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
Whittle said it was nice to see Gomez secure a win after losing to the same Selah player during the first match of the year.
Victoria Garza, playing in the No. 2 singles spot, lost to Selah's Marie Martins 6-3, 6-1.
Whittle said Garza, who injured her wrist earlier in the season, is still struggling with the injury.
Erica Mendez and Jerika Martinez, Sunnyside's No. 1 doubles team, won over Aly Cote and Emily Pratt 6-1, 6-2.
"They looked great out there," Whittle said of Mendez and Martinez. "It's the best they've looked all year together."
Playing in the No. 2 doubles spot was the team of Lizeth Chiprez and Lanna Pangle. The team won over Selah's Mara Lopez and Shannon Thorp 6-2, 6-3.
"They played really well the first set," Whittle said, noting that the two girls played much better then they did last week against Grandview.
The No. 3 doubles team of Andrea Oesterle and Jessica Gudino won over Selah's Amanda Guiterrez and Carissa Humrickhouse 6-2, 6-2.
"They looked really good," Whittle said of Oesterle and Gudino.
Whittle said he is happy to see the improvements both the boys and the girls teams have made since the beginning of season.
The Sunnyside teams will take to the court again tonight (Wednesday) at home against Ellensburg.
