On-duty trooper involved in two-car accident

GRANGER - Washington State Patrol Trooper Brandon Karas was treated and released from Sunnyside Community Hospital following a car accident that occurred Tuesday night.

According to the Washington State Patrol, a 1984 Ford Thunderbird driven by Santa L. Trevino of Sunnyside was eastbound on VanBelle Road, about five miles outside of Granger, when she crossed the center line and struck Karas in his patrol car, a 2004 Ford Crown Victoria. The accident occurred just after 8:30 p.m. Karas was on-duty at the time of the accident.

Trevino was injured but refused treatment at the scene. According to the WSP, the car driven by Trevino was totaled. Karas was injured and sent to Sunnyside Community Hospital for treatment. His patrol car sustained approximately $9,000 in damages and had to be towed from the scene. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts.

According to the WSP, the cause of the accident is still under investigation. Trevino is being charged with driving under the influence and reckless endangerment.
