KLICKITAT - Dusting off the Klickitat Vandals in two shortened, five-inning games yesterday, the Sunnyside Christian High School girls fastpitch softball team upped its winning streak to 10 games.
Tuesday's 16-0 and 16-4 victories also boosted the Lady Knights' Greater Columbia 'B' League record to 8-0. Overall on the season, Sunnyside Christian is 12-3.
Sunnyside Christian received a pair of strong efforts from hurlers Emily Hernandez and Carly DeGroot yesterday. Each twirled a three-hitter in the twin bill, and their pitching stats included seven strikeouts by Hernandez in the opening game and another six K's by DeGroot in the nightcap.
Offensively for the Lady Knights, they banged out 19 hits total in the two games.
"We hit the ball very well," said SCHS Coach Sandy Harris. "And what was nice, the girls who haven't been hitting well stepped up and hit."
In Tuesday's twin bill finale, freshman Andrea Schutt and sophomore Tori Van Wingerden swung the heavy lumber for SCHS. Both were 2-for-2 at the plate, although Schutt also had two walks in the game and drove in three runners.
"It was Andrea's first time where she played an entire game," said Harris. "She had been getting into the games for an inning or two, but this was her first full game. She really came through."
The Lady Knights exploded for five runs in the top of the first to grab the early lead on Klickitat in game two, with Courtney Rice's two-run single being the key blow, then added a five-spot in the second frame to put the contest out of reach. Schutt's RBI double in the second inning, along with a single by Van Wingerden, sparked the uprising. Sunnyside Christian added another five-run burst in the top of the third.
The only runs Klickitat came up with on the day were the four tallies it pushed across the plate in the bottom of the fifth. In that frame, DeGroot put two Vandal runners aboard on walks and Klickitat struck for two of their three hits in the game.
In Tuesday's opener, Klickitat never could get anything started and the Lady Knights rolled to the easy 16-0 victory. All told against the Vandals, Sunnyside Christian struck for 12 hits in the first game. Hernandez and Tyssyna Van Wingerden had three hits apiece for the winners, and DeGroot and Brittany den Hoed each added a two-hit performance.
Sunnyside Christian is scheduled to host the Lyle Cougars this coming Friday. The first of the two games is set to start at 2 p.m.
