Schutt, Lick post sub-80 rounds at Ellensburg match

ELLENSBURG - Sunnyside High School golfers Andrew Schutt and Kevin Lick, both seniors, turned in a pair of sub-80 rounds Tuesday at a Mid-Valley League three-school match in Ellensburg.

Coupled with an 82 by junior Zach Hathaway and an 88 carded by freshman Justin Bos, the Grizzly linksters placed second with a team tally of 325.

West Valley, paced by medalist Ryan Hall's 1-under-par 70, won the match with a team total of 303. The host Bulldogs, who got an even-par 71 from Adam Aldridge, scored a 328 to bring up the rear.

Schutt, who actually attends Sunnyside Christian High School but plays with the Grizzly golf team because his school doesn't field a golf squad, posted Sunnyside's low score Tuesday. He opened with a 1-over 36 on the front nine and was four strokes above par on the back side, finishing with a 40.

Sunnyside Coach Glenn Braman said Schutt could have probably scored lower than the 76 he carded, had the Ellensburg golf course been in good shape.

"Some of the fairways were OK for the most part, but the greens...they were pretty rough," Braman said. "Overall, the course isn't in real good condition."

Lick came in second for the Grizzlies with a 79, on front and back scores of 40-39. That Lick shot a sub-80 round was a bit surprising, considering he didn't have time to warm up before the match.

"Kevin was taking his AP tests and missed the van," said Braman. "Mr. Daley ended up driving him to Ellensburg. He didn't get to Ellensburg in time to practice. He just hit the course running."

Hathaway, in firing an 11-over 82 (40-42), continued to show signs that he's gearing up for the postseason.

"An 82, that's a good score for Zach," said Braman. "But I still think he's capable of shaving a couple of strokes off his score."

The freshman Bos rounded out the varsity scoring for Sunnyside with his 88 (46-42).

Also competing for the Grizzlies yesterday were Tim Taylor and Jeramie Drollinger, although neither of their scores were applied to the team total. Drollinger finished with a 91, and Taylor shot a 96.

Braman said an extra match has been added to his club's schedule, noting that a non-league competition will be held at Black Rock Creek Golf Course this coming Thursday.
