Collecting 24 hits on the afternoon, the Sunnyside Christian High School girls fastpitch softball team rolled to a pair of easy wins over the visiting Lyle Cougars last Friday.
The 10-2 and 13-0 decisions upped the Lady Knights' Greater Columbia 'B' League record to 10-0, 14-3 overall. The two victories also boosted Sunnyside Christian's current winning streak to a dozen games.
"We don't like to talk about that," said SCHS Coach Sandy Harris. "We're taking each game just one at a time."
In Friday's opener a 10-hit attack, paced by junior Courtney Rice's 3-for-4 effort, did in the visiting Cougs. Rice drove in three of the Lady Knights' 10 runs. Sunnyside Christian also received 2-for-3 and 2-for-4 offensive efforts from Carly DeGroot and Brittany den Hoed, respectively. DeGroot, like Rice, collected three RBI in the opening game. Also contributing was Abby Berkompas, who drove in one run on a 1-one-1 effort. Berkompas also drew a pair of walks in the opening game.
In the 13-0 shutout in the nightcap, DeGroot limited Lyle to just three hits. She fanned three and walked three in going the distance.
DeGroot received plenty of offensive support, as the Lady Knights banged out 14 hits in the twin bill finale. Coming through with two hits apiece were den Hoed, Andrea Schutt, Emily Hernandez, Tyssyna Van Wingerden and Tori Van Wingerden.
Sunnyside Christian is scheduled to play a non-league game against Grandview tomorrow (Tuesday) on the Lady Knights' home field. The SCHS girls will then close out regular season play at Mabton this coming Saturday. The Lady Vikings have just two league losses, meaning that Saturday's showdown is for the conference crown.
