SELAH - Sunnyside High School senior Kevin Lick powered the Grizzly boys golf team to a runaway win at a four-school Mid-Valley League match Tuesday afternoon.
Lick's 1-over-par 72 at the Yakima Elks Golf & Country Club in Selah earned him medalist honors. The closest golfer to him was Ellensburg's Adam Aldridge, who shot a 5-over 76.
The Grizzlies tallied a match low 310 strokes. Ellensburg was a distant second with a team score of 351. In third was the host Selah Vikings (366), and Prosser placed fourth (427).
Sunnyside Coach Glenn Braman said the 310 team score his Grizzlies tallied was impressive, considering the tough playing conditions yesterday.
"I was pleasantly surprised with that number," he said. "The course was playing tough. The rough was definitely long. You couldn't hardly beat your ball out of the rough. There was a premium on hitting the ball in the fairway."
While Lick was the catalyst for Sunnyside's victory, he got lots of support from the likes of Justin Bos, Andrew Schutt and Zach Hathaway.
Bos, only a freshman, carded a sub-80 round with a sparkling 6-over 77. Schutt hit 80 on the head, and only one stroke back with an 81 was Hathaway.
Also competing for Sunnyside yesterday, although their scores weren't applied to the team tally, were Tim Taylor (86) and Jeramie Drollinger (93).
Selah was led by Kevin Greiner's 79. The low individual round for Prosser was Jared Leighty's 93.
Sunnyside's golf team is scheduled to host Grandview in a non-league match next Tuesday, which will close out the regular season. Postseason regional competition in Spokane is slated for Monday, May 23.
