Mabton advances 14 to District

GLENWOOD - Mabton High School's Webster Lopez was the lone first place finisher for the Vikes at the Greater Columbia League 'B' Track Meet held in Glenwood this past Friday.

Lopez, who competed in two events, took his first place honors in the 3,200-meter race, finishing ahead of the pack with a time of 10:40. He also claimed a fifth place finish in the 1,600-meter race with a time of 4:48.

Lopez will attend the District track meet to be held in Wapato this coming Friday, along with the rest of the Mabton team.

The Mabton boys earned 68 team points at the Glenwood meet while the Mabton girls earned 42 points to place both squads in the top five team finishes.

The Mabton boys 4x400 relay team took third at the meet with a time of 3:52. On the squad are Pedro Huecias, Luis Quintero, Ryan Harris and Ozzie Medina. Medina also took third place honors in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:13. Moises Gutierrez took second in the long jump with a leap of 18-7-1/.2 He also took third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 45.1 He came in sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 36-5-3/4.

Robert Marquez was a fifth place finisher in the discus with a throw of 113 feet while claiming a seventh place spot in the shotput with a distance of 34-8.

Ryan Harris claimed a fourth place finish in the high jump at 5-6 while capturing a fifth place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 36-11. He also took seventh in the javelin at 128-6.

Securing a spot at District with twin eighth place finishes in the javelin and the triple jump was Claro Calzada. Calzada improved his personal record in the javelin to 123-10 and in the triple jump to 31-2 in his attempt to head to Districts.

On the Mabton girls team, it was Lupita Gomez taking second place honors in the long jump with a 14-4-3/4 leap. She also took third in the triple jump with a distance of 31-2. Vanessa Gonzalez was fifth in the javelin with a throw of 71-1.

Regina Palomarez was first in the discus with a throw of 78 feet while taking sixth in the shotput with a distance of 25-5. Her teammate, Daniela Aguilar, was sixth in the long jump with a leap of 13-2-12 and a seventh place finisher in the triple jump with a distance of 28-9.

Long distance runner Veronica Sustaita finished in sixth place in the 1,600 with a personal record time of 6:59, while Anabel Diaz finished in seventh place with a personal best time of 7:08. Both runners will also advance to Districts. Districts will see the top four finishers in each event advance to Regionals, said Coach Rob Roettger. Regionals will be held in Ellensburg May 27.
