Vlieger steps down from council

The seat Sunnyside City Councilman Don Vlieger has filled for nearly eight years will sit empty next Monday when the council convenes for its next meeting.

Last Friday, Vlieger submitted a letter to Mayor Ed Prilucik tendering his resignation effective as of today (Monday).

Sunnyside City Manager Bob Stockwell said Vlieger, who would have been up for re-election this fall, wrote in his letter that he planned to resign because he wasn't going to be available over the course of the next few months.

Stockwell said Vlieger wrote that he was going to be out of town with his family for most of the summer and had some business commitments that were going to keep him busy through the fall.

"I believe Sunnyside will be better served if the council can appoint a replacement that will be available over the summer and fall," Vlieger wrote in his letter.
