ELLENSBURG - This past Saturday saw the Grandview High School boys track and field team post a strong fourth place finish at the prestigious Jewett Invitational in Ellensburg.
Mid-Valley League track power Ellensburg won its annual meet with a dominating 192 points. Monroe was a distant second with 95 and Moses Lake followed in third place with 90 points. Grandview rounded out the top four with 84 points, comfortably ahead of fifth place Eisenhower with 42. Lakeside and Wahluke rounded out the seven-team field with 16 and zero points, respectively.
"We competed well," said Grandview Coach Jared Lind.
The Greyhounds were led on Saturday by the efforts of Cody McMillan, who won the shotput with a toss of 50-9-1/4. Ellensburg's Brody Faire was second with a mark of 49-1. McMillan also won the discus with a mark of 155-11. Faire took runner-up honors in the discus with a throw of 147-10.
McMillan was the lone first place finisher for Grandview, but the Greyhounds had several second place marks.
Lind said one particular effort that stood out was Michael Jimenez in the long jump. Jimenez took second place honors, at 19-6. Chris Andrews of Moses Lake won the event, at 20-5-3/4.
"That is a big breakthrough for him," said Lind of Jimenez.
Silas Hansen nabbed a fourth place finish in the long jump for the Greyhounds with a mark of 18-7-3/4. Teammate James Vela was sixth, at 18-6.
Josue Schneegans had a strong showing in the triple jump for the Greyhounds, taking second place honors with a mark of 38-10. Jackson Beach of Ellensburg won the triple jump, at 39-1.
Grandview's 4x100-meter relay team finished second with a clocking of 44.95. Monroe won the relay with a time of 43.68. The Greyhounds' 4x400-meter relay team also took second place honors with a time of 3:37.22. Ellensburg won the 4x400 with a time of 3:29.06.
In the 800 meter, Vela took runner-up honors with a time of 2:04.64. Isaak Bergman of Ellensburg won the 800 with a clocking of 1:57.36.
Grandview's Cordero Cisneros took third in the 400-meter with a time of 51.42, finishing just behind Avery Sligh of Monroe, who had a time of 51.3 seconds. Aaron Wafer of Moses Lake took top honors in the 400 with a time of 50.58.
In the high jump, Grandview's Noel Hinojosa took third place honors, clearing 5-10. Teammate Brad Copeland was fourth in the high jump with a mark of 5-8. Brandon Thorpe of Ellensburg had the winning mark of 6-0.
The Greyhounds had two runners place in the grueling 3,200-meter run. Robert Barajas had a fourth place finish with a time of 11:46.41. Teammate Matt Emerson finished sixth with a clocking of 13:14.51. Mitchel Elias of Monroe had the winning time of 10:58.21.
The Greyhounds will be competing at Sub-districts this Saturday in Othello, which will feature all the teams from the Central Washington Athletic Conference south division.
