Unsecured load fees at landfills to increase

The Yakima County commissioners are looking into updating the fees that are charged to those who pull up to county transfer stations and landfills with unsecured loads.

The fee schedule currently in use was adopted in 1985. Yakima County Solid Waste Manager Wendy Mifflin explained that there are currently three different fees when it comes to unsecured loads. She said the different fees are based on load size and range from $3 for a load that is comprised of fewer than three yards of material to $10 for a load that includes more than 10 yards of material.

Mifflin said the proposed updated fee schedule would make the fee $5 for any passenger vehicle with an unsecured load that has one to three yards of material, and $15 for an unsecured load that includes more than three yards of material.

Mifflin said the updating that is being proposed also makes changes that correspond with state law. She said new regulations have recently been adopted that make it unnecessary for loads of sand, dirt or gravel to be covered.

A public hearing on the updated fee schedule will take place Tuesday, May 31, at 10:30 a.m. at the Yakima County Courthouse.
