Spring concerts set to take place in Mabton and S'side

Two local school districts are planning on bringing music to the ears of the community next week.

A band and choir concert is set to take place in the gymnasium at Mabton Junior/Senior High School on Monday night at 6:30 p.m.

Sunnyside will be hosting a concert made up of Harrison Middle School and Sunnyside High School students. The concert will take place Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. in the Sunnyside High School auditorium. The concert will feature solo performances by several high school seniors.

Zillah actors to present ‘Comedy of Love and War’

ZILLAH - The Zillah High School drama department will present "Comedy of Love and War" Wednesday, May 25, at 7 p.m. at the Zillah High School auditorium.

The play will be presented by the high school's advanced drama class under the direction of Lynn Brant.

Brant said 14 students committed six weeks of their time to produce, direct and act in the play written by California playwright Richard Nathan.

Admission to the single performance is $1 per person. Tickets will be available at the door.

Sunset events at

Pike Place Market

SEATTLE - One of downtown's best viewpoints of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains now gives downtown workers and residents a reason to delay heading home from work.

On the first Thursday of June, July and August, the Pike Place Market will host a special evening market called Sunset Thursdays at Pike Place. It will take place 5 to 9 p.m. on June 2, July 7 and August 4.

Planned to complement Pioneer Square's First Thursdays, the Pike Place Market's Sunset Thursday will feature art, as well as food. "The evening market will see artists bringing new items they don't usually sell at the Market," said Marlene Allen, Market Master for the Pike Place Market Preservation and Development Authority (PDA).

"It will also be an opportunity for artists to sell some of their larger works because they can have more selling space," Allen added.

In addition to being a showcase for creativity, shoppers will also be able to take home fresh vegetables and fruits from Market farmers. Hazelnuts, flavored almonds, jams, dried meats and fruits will be among what's offered in June. First-of-the-season strawberries will be available from Chasengnou Farm, and Magana Farm may bring their first zucchinis. Alvarez Farm will have their popular peanut roaster and a variety of pepper products.

It's the first time in many years that customers will be able to shop the Pike Place Market during evening hours.

Mabton to host spring concert

MABTON - Mabton Jr./Sr. High School will host its music department spring concert next Monday, May 23.

The 6:30 p.m. concert is free and open to all community members.
