The deadline to apply for disaster aid for Hurricanes Katrina and Rita has been extended to Jan. 11, 2006, by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
According to the FEMA public affairs office, FEMA is redoubling efforts to reach the hurricane victims in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, who, for whatever reason, have never applied for help.
FEMA is also asking community civic groups, churches and the media to lend a hand in spreading the word about the extension to help ensure that no one who suffered losses in these massive storms will be overlooked.
Jan. 11, 2006 will now be the last day for residents to apply for state and federal disaster assistance to help them recover from the hurricanes that devastated the Gulf Coast.
To apply for assistance, call FEMA at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Lines will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week until further notice.
