Reuben Medina Chavez, 94, of Sunnyside passed away Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005, at Yakima Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Aug. 8, 1911 to Remedios and Juanita (Medina) Chavez in Globe, Ariz. At an early age, Reuben with his family moved to Rocky Ford, Colo., where they farmed until 1922. On Oct. 5, 1929, he married Mercedes Macias in Worland, Wyo. Reuben and Mercedes raised their family in a house that he had built, working various jobs in farming and construction. Following World War II, he was an assistant farm agent for the Washakie County in the Big Horn Basin.
Reuben enjoyed music and belonged to many musical groups in the swing band era. He played the saxophone, clarinet, piano and guitar throughout Wyoming, Montana and Colorado.
He was a long-time member of the Iglesia del Calvario in Sunnyside.
He is survived by his children, Isaac Chavez of Sunnyside, David Chavez of San Leandro, Calif., Irene Chavez of Oakland, Calif., Manuel Chavez of Fort Bragg, Calif., Edward Chavez and wife, Geneva, of Medford, Ore., Juanita Moya and husband, Abel, of Sunnyside, Reuben Chavez Jr. and wife, Julie, of Lake Almanor, Calif., Helen Lopez and husband, Samuel, of Yakima, Daniel Chavez of Sunnyside, and Desi Appel and husband, Ron, of Arcadia, Calif.; 17 grandchildren, 16 great- grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; and a brother, Alvin Chavez of Oakland.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mercedes Chavez; a son, Pete Chavez; a grandson, Aaron Chavez; and a sister, Amparo Martinez.
Viewing and visitation will be held Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside. Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 7, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside, with burial to follow at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens, Sunnyside. Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
