Sunnyside city councilman Bruce Ricks resigned yesterday, Nov. 10, following his loss to challenger Carol Stone in the Nov. 8 general election.
Ricks said his resignation is effective immediately, following the example of former city councilman Chad Werkhoven four years ago when he resigned his seat to the then newly elected Bengie Aguilar.
Ricks said he hopes the same protocol is followed this time, with Stone appointed as his replacement through the end of the year.
Stone and all election winners are scheduled to be sworn into office in January 2006.
Citing the fact that council is now working on the 2006 budget, Ricks said it is only appropriate for Stone to have the opportunity to help develop the budget.
"The new council members are going to have to live with the budget set by the existing council," he said. "It is only good business that the incoming member actually has a voice and a vote to achieve their goals."
The interim council seat will ultimately be appointed by Mayor Ed Prilucik, who is not required to select Stone. "It is the Mayor's call," noted Ricks.
Though he has resigned his seat following election defeat, Ricks said he will keep his future options open.
"I have a heart for this type of service and enjoy this county," Ricks observed. "It is the future 'Napa Valley' of Washington."
