FEDERAL WAY - Sunnyside High School's Rachelle Durfey swam in her first State meet last Friday and although she didn't win, she gained some valuable experience for next year.
"Obviously, the biggest thing is she now has State experience," Sunnyside Coach Scott Southard said.
Durfey finished in 23rd place during the 50-meter freestlyle qualifying race. Her time of 26.83 was just over three seconds slower than Anne Scott of Bainbridge Island, whose time of 23.37 was good enough to win the qualifying race. The next day Scott took the State title with an All-American time of 23.33.
Durfey entered the meet in the 24th spot and she moved up one, Southard said.
"I think having this experience will help her next year at Districts and State," he added.
