As the 2005 NFL football season begins to wind down, I've noticed some familiar looks on the faces of Seahawk fans.
I think we all know the look I'm talking about. It's the same look the Seahawk fans wore in 2003, 1997, and as far back as 1980. It's the look someone gets when they think they know something is for sure.
The only thing anyone knows for SURE about the Seattle Seahawks is that no one is SURE about anything when it comes to these guys.
I'm not trying to come down on the Seahawks, I like them. I'm just trying to save you hardcore Seahawk fans some heartache here towards the end of the season.
I know what some of you are saying. The Seahawks are four games up in their division with six games to go, it's a lock.
Well, let's not forget 1980, when the Hawks lost their last nine games. Or how about the four-game losing streak to end the season in 1997. We finished 8-8 that season. A record the Seahawks have matched countless times over the years.
In 2003 the Seahawks won 10 games for the first time in 17 years. I was shocked when I heard that number back in '03. I couldn't believe I had been putting up with 6-10, 7-9, 8-8 and 9-7 seasons. Oh, and that 2-14 season in 1992.
So forgive me if I'm a little slow to jump on the bandwagon.
The Hawks are 8-2 and they host the N.Y. Giants this week. I think this will be a good game but the Giants, I believe, will pull it out for some reason. I'm not sure what will happen but I'm predicting the Hawks will Coug it at some point in the game. That would put them at 8-3.
After the Giants game the Hawks travel to Philadelphia. The struggling Eagles will find some dramatic way to win this game and the Hawks will fall to 8-4.
After some finger pointing and some excuses by Holmgren, the Hawks will come back to Seattle and host the San Francisco 49ers and be shocked when the 49ers win. 8-5!
The Hawks will go to Memphis and beat the Titans handily and bring their record to 9-5. After that, the Seahawks will come back home and play the Colts. I see the Colts winning this one and the Hawks' record falling to 9-6. Does all this sound familiar to anyone else?
The last game of the season will be against the Green Bay Packers. Holmgren's old team. Brett Favre's most likely last game of his career. The game will be played at Lambeau Field in the bitter cold of winter. The Hawks could easily lose this game and finish the season once again, 9-7. Or, they could win the game and finish the season 10-6 after getting off to a 8-2 start. Either way, disappointing.
The 49ers, Titans and Packers are all 2-8 right now so the odds should favor the Seahawks to finish the season at least 11-5 and with the Eagles in a free-fall, a 12-4 season is not out of the question.
I hope it happens, I just don't think it will. I predict a 10-6 record and a first round playoff loss. You gotta love those Hawks.
