I'll get you my pretty and your little dog, too. That particular line, aimed at Dorothy by the wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz, kind of sums up how some in our community have interpreted their dealings with our city fathers the last eight years.
Well....as the munchkins sang out so gleefully when the tornado dropped Dorothy and her Kansas home on top of the Witch of the East....Ding dong, sing it high, sing it low, the wicked witch is dead.
The results from November's General Election are nearly certified, and it appears that the last remnants of that core group on the Sunnyside City Council that brought sweeping change to the community have been replaced by kinder and gentler folks.
Don't get me wrong. The four-person bloc that was elected to the Council back in '97, and the subsequent election of like-minded individuals, has accomplished some great things for our community. But as positive as some of those changes have been, they have been countered with much more negativity and ugliness that have gone hand-in-hand with them. Simply put, the method in which the changes were accomplished was flawed.
There was no need for public humiliation or name calling. Bully-like tactics shouldn't have been used in effecting the change that was sought. Alienating other Council members, as well as numerous community residents, shouldn't have been necessary to achieve the goals that were clearly established by these elected officials.
Looking back at the past eight years you have to wonder if we were being led down the yellow brick road to riches and glory, or down a primrose path fraught with thorns and unforseen problems. Only time will tell.
What is clear, though, is that we no longer will be searching out the wizard, the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. He doesn't exist, and I believe our newly elected common-sense City Council recognizes there are no magical fixes.
I don't think we're in Kansas any more, Toto.
