Lady Vikes split games at jamboree

MABTON - The Lady Vikings hosted Liberty Christian and the Grandview junior varsity in a jamboree Tuesday night at Mabton High School.

The jamboree format varied slightly from others being held in the area. Instead of teams being split into A and B squads, teams played two, five-minute halves.

Mabton played the Grandview JV in their first game of the evening. The Lady Vikes easily beat the Lady 'Hounds 26-4.

Mabton senior Alida Mendoza lead the Vikes' scoring, dropping in nine points.

Freshman Ana Jimenez added eight, and three other players had two points each.

The Vikings didn't fare as well against Liberty Christian, dropping the game 22-13.

Liberty Christian outscored Mabton 16-4 in the first five minutes of the game, Mabton Coach Mike Roettger said.

The Vikings outscored Liberty Christian 9-6 in the second half, but it was too little, too late.

Senior Erica Sanchez led the scoring for the Vikings in that game, with five points.

Four other players each dropped in a bucket.

Senior Regina Palomarez picked up two of her allotted three fouls in the early minutes of that game, Roettger said.

When she returned in the second half, she picked up another quick foul and fouled out.

Roettger said Palomarez needs to stay out of foul trouble for his team to be successful.

"We need to play harder," he said. "We need to come out ready to play."

Despite the team's poor performance against Liberty Christian, Roettger said he's not going to get upset about losing a game in a jamboree.

He said 99 percent of a jamboree is for getting nerves out for the first outing of the season.

"We'll be fine." Roettger said. "I'm not going to lose any sleep over a jamboree."

Last year, Mabton lost to Class B powerhouse Kittitas at a season-opening jamboree, but later defeated the Coyotes in the regular season.

Roettger said his team still does have things to work on.

"Our work ethic needs to improve," he said. "We have to learn to work hard day in and day out."

The Lady Vikings host White Swan this Friday night, and will travel to Moses Lake Christian Saturday for an afternoon game.
