OTHELLO - A strong start wasn't enough as Grandview fell 3-1 at Othello this past Saturday in CWAC girls' soccer action.
"We started out really well," observed Coach Anne Holden. "We scored the first goal and picked up right where we left off from our game against Sunnyside." The Lady 'Hounds rallied three times in that one before losing in a shoot-out.
Soph sensation Anna George found the back of the net in the ninth minute off an assist from Cris Meza to put the Lady 'Hounds up 1-0.
The hosts responded in the 22nd minute as Othello tied it up at 1-1 in the 22nd minute.
The score remained even through the rest of the first half and well into the second.
But the game turned in the 68th minute on an own-goal that gave Othello the lead for good at 2-1. "They took a free kick and one of our defenders tried to help by kicking at the ball," Holden explained. "But she deflected the ball away from our keeper and into the goal."
"That one took the wind out of our sails," Holden said of the upset bid against Othello, which is now 5-1 in league.
Grandview had point-blank opportunities on goal, but couldn't find an equalizer. Othello sealed the win with a goal in the 75th minute.
"I'm proud of how we played," said Holden. "If that own goal doesn't go in the whole game would have turned on a dime."
Keeper Olivia Macias had 10 saves to help keep Grandview close.
The Lady Greyhounds (1-5, 1-8) will try to get back on the winning track at home this Tuesday against Toppenish.
"We know we're on the right track," said Holden. "But it would be nice to win a close one."
