PASCO - Eighth grader Junior Hernandez and freshman Danielle Raschko placed sixth and eighth, respectively, last Saturday at the Big Cross Invitational, hosted by the Pasco Bulldogs.
The two Bickleton High School underclassmen turned in extremely competitive performances at the prep invitational, which featured 4A Moses Lake and Pasco, as well as 2A Ki-Be, Connell and Grandview. Bickleton is a Class B school.
Bickleton Coach Darrell Lang noted the cross country course at Pasco can be challenging because of its rolling hills and varied trail flooring. He also noted that his smaller school harriers were competing against much larger and experienced teams.
But, said Lang, "...(Hernandez) was not intimidated by the larger schools and ran a very smart race."
Hernandez dueled with Jose Mendez of Grandview and another harrier from Moses Lake down the stretch for the sixth through eighth place spots. The Bickleton eighth grader persevered over the pair, placing sixth.
"For an eighth grader to run with such poise and determination says a lot about how far this young man has progressed in just over half a season," said Lang.
In assessing Raschko's performance, Lang said the freshman continues to improve her endurance and is starting to develop a kick at the end of her races.
Lang said the challenging Pasco course made for some slow times, ..."but with the fast track coming up on Tuesday (Oct. 4) at Granger we look for some improvements (in personal bests)."
