Scott places 6th at Sunfair meet

YAKIMA - Sunnyside's Sterling Scott should have been all smiles after finishing Saturday's three-mile Sunfair Cross Country Meet course.

Turning in a superb effort, Scott earned a sixth place showing in the varsity boys Flight #1 race. He maneuvered the hilly Franklin Park course in a time of 17 minutes, 36 seconds. That was just 48 seconds back of the winner-Flathead High School's Seth Svennungsen.

The Sunfair meet is considered Central Washington's premier prep cross country meet of the year. It annually attracts more than 3,000 high school runners.

The race offers seven varsity flights for both boys and girls, as well as races for JV seniors and juniors, and separate competitions for sophomores and freshmen. The varsity races are flighted one through seven, with the No. 7 flight reserved for the upper echelon long distance harriers.

Scott was the lone Grizzly boys runner to compete in a varsity flight. Sunnyside Coach Robin Bryson said she was extremely pleased with Scott's performance.

"He ran a very strong race," Bryson said of Scott's sixth place finish from the 56-boy field.

Sunnyside, too, entered just one girl in the varsity races-sophomore Britany Messmore. Like Scott, she ran among the Flight #1 competitors. Messmore placed 24th from a field of 52 girls. She clocked a time of 22:28. The winning time, posted by Thousand Oaks High School's Alix-Ann Kitka, was 20:12.

"For this being Britany's first time competing at this large meet, she ran a good time," said Bryson.
