WAPATO - Senior Cassie Jolliff scored three goals for a rare hat trick in the Sunnyside soccer team's 3-1 Mid-Valley League win at Wapato on Thursday.
"It was double the delight," said Cassie's mom, Coach Kathy Jolliff. "It was great to get the win and for my daughter to score all three goals."
The Lady Grizzlies were tied 1-1 at halftime with Wapato on the strength of Jolliff's penalty kick goal in the fourth minute of play. The Wolves scored the equalizer in the 10th minute.
"It was a frustrating first half," Coach Jolliff noted. "The air was humid and sluggish and that's how we played."
But Sunnyside found its footing in the second half, spurred on in the knowledge that, according to Jolliff, the Lady Grizzlies needed to defeat Wapato to stay in play-off contention.
The team also began adjusting to a new line-up last night which included changes at sweeper and center defender.
"We were determined to keep the lineup the same in the second half," Jolliff said. "We just had to play better and be more aggressive."
Sunnyside was both better and aggressive in the second stanza, outshooting the Wolves 3-1.
Cassie Jolliff scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 64th minute off a feed from Yanet Candido. Sunnyside put the match away in the 79th when Candido and Jolliff again hooked up to find the back of the net.
"Cassie and Yanet were doing a great job of connecting with their passes," observed Jolliff.
Amanda Williams had four saves for Sunnyside, which pounded 12 shots on goal against Wapato.
The Lady Grizzlies (3-5, 4-8) have the weekend off before traveling to Selah next Tuesday.
