BOARDMAN, ORE. - Sunnyside Christian High School crossed the river and state lines to play a friendly match with Riverside High School's JV soccer team Thursday.
The Knights varsity squad won easily, 7-0 in a non-league match. The game was supposed to be played in September but scheduling conflicts forced them to wait until yesterday.
On a pleasant but overcast and windy day, the Knights scored early and often. Aaron Van de Graaf started things off with a goal in the 3rd minute of play. 14 minutes later Paul Groenewold added another goal to make it 2-0.
Matt Haak assisted Joel Koopmans with a goal in the 22nd minute and then added a goal himself three minutes later. This goal was assisted by Van de Graaf. In the 32nd minute Haak returned the favor by assisting Van de Graaf with his second goal of the day.
The Knights went into half-time with a comfortable 5-0 lead.
"Our middle was able to move the ball anywhere we wanted to," Knights Coach Russ Smies said.
In the second half Smies switched things up a bit and moved some players around. He switched John Bosma from goalie to forward and put Conner Erickson in at goalie.
The second half remained scoreless until the 77th minute, when Jake Bosma scored on an assist from Matt Haak. One minute later John Bosma scored an unassisted goal in the 78th minute.
"A goal by a goalie, you don't see that too often," Smies said. "It was a great shot. John was 25 yards out and he put it right in the corner."
Smies said the game was a good opportunity for his players to play some different positions. The Knights play all league games in October so Smies said it was nice for his team to get a non-league game in where they good mix it up.
Sunnyside Christian resumes league play today at home, taking on Trout Lake at 4 p.m.
