WEST VALLEY - The Sunnyside boys and girls cross country squads closed out Mid-Valley League competition yesterday with a pair of losses to West Valley and Ellensburg.
The two Grizzly squads both finished with 1-6 league marks.
Running Thursday on West Valley's cross country course, the Sunnyside boys were upended 15-48 by the host Rams and 20-37 by Ellensburg.
West Valley's boys grabbed five of the top seven spots in the race, including a first place finish from Christopher Glaser, who clocked a time of 16:53. Ellensburg had the second and third place finishers in Isak Bergman (17:36) and Birkin Owart (18:31).
The top finisher for the Sunnyside boys was Sterling Scott. He placed ninth overall with a clocking of 18:55. Teammate Gracen Gonzalez had the next highest finish for the Grizzly harriers, placing 13th in a time of 19:11.
In the girls race, West Valley claimed the top six finishes. Michelle Schubert won the race with a clocking of 20:11.
Ellensburg had the seventh place finisher-Stephanie Cooke, who hit the finish line in 22:51. Sunnyside's Britany Messmore placed eighth, clocking a 23:03. The Lady Grizzlies' next highest finisher was Alyson Waddle, well back in 19th place (26:04).
The Sunnyside girls squad fell by scores of 15-49 to West Valley and 19-36 to Ellensburg.
The Grizzly runners will spend the next week readying for the District meet, which will be hosted by Hanford on Saturday, Oct. 22.
