YAKIMA - The Mabton volleyball team lost a tough match against LaSalle last night, losing 25-23, 16-25, 25-9, 17-25, 14-16 in a five-game thriller.
The Vikings started off with a spark playing well throughout the whole match.
The first game was a see-saw affair as the score went back and forth with neither team ever gaining a big lead. Mabton eventually prevailed 25-23.
In the second set, errors doomed the Vikings and they lost 25-16.
The third set was better. Daniela Aguilar went to serve with the Vikings down 9-6. She then reeled off 19 consecutive points on her serve to take the third game 25-9.
In the fourth set the errors started creeping up again for Mabton. "Our biggest problem was us struggling on service return," Mabton Coach Olivia Mendoza said.
The fifth game was close throughout and LaSalle ended it on a clean hit to win the game 16-14 and the match 3-2.
"Overall the whole team's performance was much better than our last," Mendoza said. "I think this was the best game we played all season."
Elida Mendoza had 13 kills and 4 blocks for the Lady Vikes. Myra Diaz had 6 kills, Aguilar finished with 4 kills and 7 aces and Josie Chase added 5 kills and 10 assists.
The Vikings close out regular season play this Thursday against Riverside Christian.
