TOPPENISH - All roads lead through unbeaten East Valley if Grandview's soccer team is to make the playoffs.
The Lady Greyhounds clinched at least a tie for the CWAC South's final berth with a 1-0 victory at Toppenish on Thursday.
Anna George scored in the 16th minute when she found the back of the net from 20 yards out. "She placed it like a postage stamp, in the upper right corner of the net, just under the crossbar," noted Grandview Coach Anne Holden.
Outshooting Toppenish 9-3, Grandview made the lead stand up to improve to 5-6 in league and 5-9 overall. It marked the Lady Hounds' fourth win in their last five matches.
They'll need all that momentum and more at East Valley Saturday.
Though Grandview can do no worse than tie Connell's final season record of 5-7, Connell leads by a point in the standings.
That's due to the Lady Greyhounds' Oct. 4 shootout win over Toppenish. In 2A, a win is three points but a shootout nets a team just two points, thus Grandview's single point deficit behind Connell.
To make the playoffs, Grandview must either defeat the Red Devils or at least force a shootout. A shootout loss would net Grandview a point, enough to tie Connell and force a tie-breaker match next Tuesday at Kiona-Benton.
"We know what we have to do," said Holden. "The earlier shootout against Toppenish has put us in a pickle, so we just have to try and conjure up at least a point at East Valley."
