Sanchez take first, sets course record

BENTON CITY - Grandview's Brittnee Sanchez set a course record yesterday, running the 3.1 mile course at Ki-Be in 18:48.

"Britnee is just starting to get in shape now," Grandview Cross Country Coach Jim Pillers said.

While the other CWAC runners kept in shape and ran all summer, Sanchez didn't, preferring to rest and recover from a track injury she suffered last year. "She's running great now," Pillers said.

On the boys side, Greyhound Jose Mendez ran to a third place finish with a time of 17:02.

"Jose just ran a super, strong race," Pillers said. "He's a freshman and he ran an excellent time. He beat a lot of kids he hasn't beat all year."

Pillers said Mendez has a good shot at making it to state if he can finish the year in the top 20 at District.

Granview's Marco Diaz finished the race in 26th place. He ran a time of 18:48. Spencer Blanshan was the only other runner from Grandview and his time of 21:36 was good for 47th place.

Nick Peters of Toppenish finished first in the boys race with a time of 16:30.

Grandview will race at District next Thursday at Walla Walla State Park in Wenatchee.
