MOXEE - With the exception of two costly minutes, Grandview's soccer team stayed with East Valley in a 3-0 season-ending loss Saturday.
Needing a win to overtake Connell - or at least a shootout loss to tie - in the league standings, Grandview was sharp for the first 35 minutes against a tough East Valley squad.
But that all changed in the 36th and 37th minute, when the Red Devils struck for two of their three goals.
"It was a very close game. But when they scored their first goal we were so worried that we became vulnerable instead of tightening up our defense," noted Coach Anne Holden. "East Valley came back and scored straight away."
The Red Devils sealed the win with a third goal in the 72nd minute.
The loss ended Grandview's season at 5-7 in league and 5-10 overall.
"At the beginning of the season the girls wanted a chance to make the playoffs," said Holden. "They had their chance and fought for it but just came up short."
It marked the second consecutive season that Grandview finished just one point out of the playoff race.
To get over the hump next year, Holden suggested her team may try to regroup for one or two practices a week over the summer.
"We're getting the results of a team that's practicing only during the season," noted Holden. "If we can put in a little more practice over the summer maybe the results will be different because we will have played together more."
