Sunnyside's Brown Sox are on a roll.
At the fifth annual Chepito Valdez Memorial Men's Slo-pitch Softball Tournament in Wapato this past weekend, the Sunnyside club earned top honors. The team compiled a 7-1 record enroute to winning the championship.
"We had the bats going on Sunday, actually both days other than one game," said Brown Sox Manager Bob Sarmiento Sr. "We hit the ball well."
Lino Gutierrez of the Brown Sox was named MVP of the Wapato tournament. Sarmiento and teammate Chris McCallum were named to the tourney all-star squad.
The weekend before (Aug. 27-28), the Brown Sox came out on top at the annual Chicano/Latino State Softball Tournament, staged at Sunnyside's SunnyView Park. The field was 13 teams strong.
With sponsorship help from El Valle Restaurant, the Brown Sox went undefeated on Sunday enroute to winning the State crown. Scott Perkins of the Brown Sox was named tournament co-MVP. The other MVP came off the second place Oregon Outlaws squad-Stevie Nanez.
State tournament all-star selections included Bobby Garza, Andy Carrizales, Bobby Sarmiento Jr. and Gutierrez from the Brown Sox; Abel Valdez, Robbie Nanez and Fidel Nanez of the Oregon Outlaws; Raul Jasso and Roger Guzman of Ortega's Auto Repair; Ralph Serrato and John Roby of Alex & Franky's Team; Berto Rivera of the Guzzlers; and Roger Rivera of Vargas Trucking; Steve Rodriguez and Sammy Mendoza of the Wild Boys; Cory Davison and Dave Rodriguez of B&D Transmission; Martin Sanchez and Jeff Jensen of Team Krush; Tony Rubalcaba and Gilbert Morales of the Super Chicanos; Robbie Luna and Bob Luna of Tony's Guzzlers; amd Johnny Zavala and Jesse Garcia of Fonseca's Hiway Fruit.
