MOXEE - The Sunnyside girls soccer team opened the season Thursday with a 4-1 loss at East Valley.
Despite the final score, the Lady Grizzlies were in this one, keeping things close against the Red Devils, last year's 2A state runner-up.
Sunnyside trailed just 1-0 at halftime and pulled to within 2-1 at the 55-minute mark thanks to a Cassie Jolliff goal from 35 yards out.
The host Red Devils finally pulled away in the last 20 minutes with two late goals against the younger Lady Grizzlies.
"They were tough competition for us," Sunnyside Coach Kathy Jolliff said of her team's season-opening opponent. "All my girls played well and for many it was their first varsity match."
Jolliff praised the play of sophomore keeper Amanda Williams. "You practice certain things but you wonder what will happen in the real game," the coach noted. "But Amanda played great for us in goal and it was only her first start."
The Lady Grizzlies hit the road Saturday for a non-league game at Hermiston, Ore. before starting league play at Ellensburg next Tuesday.
