Berta Marie Clemmens, 74, a longtime Sunnyside resident, died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005, after a short battle with cancer.

Marie was born on Feb. 26, 1931 in Seattle, the daughter of William Ira and Millicent (Rice) Morris. Marie’s father was a preacher so her early years were spent in Washington and Oregon traveling with his ministry. In 1948 her father was holding a revival in Gleed and Marie visited Sunnyside, where she met and later married Mark Clemmens on Nov. 7, 1948, at Sunnyside Free Methodist Church.

Following their marriage they lived in Sunnyside, where Marie was a farmer’s wife, mother and homemaker. Marie attended Camp Fire, Scouting and 4-H events with her children. After the children were raised Marie became a certified state caregiver. She worked for and helped many Lower Valley residents.

Marie attended Sunnyside Neighborhood Assembly of God Church and was a member of Sunny Valley Grange. She enjoyed gardening, reading and never let anything go to waste.

Marie is survived by her husband of 57 years, Mark of Sunnyside; two children, Lisa Williams and Thomas Peter Clemmens, both of Sunnyside; five grandchildren, Jenna, Gregg, Derrick, Mark and Mariah; two brothers, Bill Morris of Milton-Free Water, Ore. and Ted Morris of Bend, Ore.; and two sisters, Mercy Mirabel

of Centralia and Evelyn Krien of Tyler,


She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Elsie Whitmore.

Viewing and visitation will be held Monday, Sept. 12, 2005, from noon until 8 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005, at 10 a.m. at Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside. Burial will follow at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens, Sunnyside.
