ELLENSBURG - The Sunnyside girls soccer team earned its first victory Tuesday, edging host Ellensburg 2-1 on Yanet Candido's game winning - or golden - goal in sudden death overtime.
The Mid-Valley League opener for both schools was scoreless for most of the first half until Candido found the net on a penalty kick at the 35-minute mark.
"The game got off to a great start," recalled Sunnyside Coach Kathy Jolliff. "We dominated the whole first half."
Momentum shifted Ellensburg's way in the second half as the Bulldogs knotted the contest at 1-1 on a Maria Hedrich goal in the 55th minute.
Neither team could find the net over the final 25 minutes of regulation, setting up Candido's heroics as the winning goal came in the third minute of overtime.
In addition, Sunnyside keeper Amanda Williams recorded five saves in goal for the game to keep Ellensburg at bay.
"Last year we won 4-0 at Ellensburg, but this year we have a lot of new varsity players who are a bit nervous," Jolliff noted.
"I am still looking at a few players to see which combination fits best," she said of her strategy. "So we changed a few things in the line-up compared to the first two games."
Sunnyside (1-0, 1-2) is home Thursday to take on league foe West Valley beginning at 6 p.m.
